The Celtic knots are a variety of knots ans stylized graphical representation of knots for decoration, used extensively in the Celtic style of Insular Art.

The use of interlace patterns had its origines in the artwork of the la Roman Empire.  Knot pattern first appeared in the third and fourth centuries A.D. and can be seen in Roman mosaïcs of that time.

Spirals, steps patterns and key patterns are dominant motifs ine Celtic art before the christian influence on the Celts wich began around 450 A.D.

In modern times, Celtic art is popularly thought of in terms of national identity and therefore specifically Irish, Scottish and Welsh.
